MIYASAKA ADDITION | Obihiro, Hokkaido, Japan
Last year, we were honored to supply a couple semi-truck loads of Eagle Mountain Slate products for a beautiful Robert Oshatz, Architect project in Japan… the Miyasaka Addition, pictured above.
We “packaged” the slate flagstone a bit differently than we normally do for Robert by adding some “reinforcement” to the pallets the stone is stacked on so that it would survive the long voyage by ship to Japan.
When his order was ready, Robert had the slate shipped from our Eagle Mountain Slate quarry near Newport, WA to Portland, OR on flatbed semi-trucks and then transferred to a ship for the remainder of the voyage across the ocean from Portland, Oregon to Obihiro, Hokkaido, Japan.
MIYASAKA RESIDENCE | MAIN RESIDENCE | 1998
We usually don’t get to see the final result of the many of the projects our slate is used in (although we hear how beautiful many of them turn out occasionally) because we sell to customers (stone yards, etc.) who sell our slate to architects, stone masons and homeowners.
As a result, it’s impossible for us to know who many of the “end-users” are. In this case, though, Robert Oshatz called Jesse directly to order the slate so that he could match the slate in the main residence – the MIYASAKA RESIDENCE, pictured at right.
Robert shared photos of the MIYASAKA RESIDENCE with us when he ordered the slate. We thought it was just gorgeous! He told us he’d also share pictures of the MIYASAKA ADDITION project when it was finished. Both projects are just stunning on so many levels!
ROBERT OSHATZ | MIYASAKA ADDITION | 2017
I love every single thing about Robert’s work and his unique design… from the beautiful curved wooden beams and other rounded surfaces to the use of so much glass to allow lots of light to filter in… to the inlaid wooden accents he used in floor areas and in the beautiful tables to tie everything together throughout the project. As far as the slate, though, I think the “floating” benched areas Robert created using our slate (pictured below) are my favorite!
Seeing the beautiful slate floor areas and the spaces Robert created (inside and outside) in his gorgeous project was very exciting and a rare treat! It’s amazing, and we’re very honored and proud, to see our Eagle Mountain Slate used in such a wonderful, beautiful and special space.
