A “WaterWise” landscape typically includes water saving irrigation systems, reduced lawn areas (some are even “lawnless”), drought resistant plant, shrub and tree choices in borders and scattered throughout the landscape, landscape borders that utilize stone ground covers or rock mulch around shrubs or trees to help reduce water evaporation in those areas, and more pathways, patios and other areas that don’t require irrigation throughout the landscape.
The main purpose of a well-planned “WaterWise” landscape design is to reduce irrigation water use in the landscape, saving on water consumption and irrigation costs, while still creating a beautiful landscape to enjoy. A beautiful landscape that is usually much easier and more cost-effective to maintain than a traditional landscape design.
The videos below outline some of the landscape elements and common steps to create a “WaterWise” landscape.
There’s some very good information (in the “How-To” video at right) from the Lowe’s Home Improvement YouTube channel about the “design and planning” process for a WaterWise landscape.
While the soil, some plant choices and definitely the weather varies from place to place, the main design process and the planning concepts for a WaterWise landscape will be the same as, for the most part, or very similar to those talked about in the video.
Once you come up with a theme and a design you’re happy with, you can create a WaterWise step-by-step plan based on your ideas, landscape needs and goals for reducing water use and irrigation costs in your landscape.
After that, you can install as much (or little) of your new WaterWise landscape as you want by doing it in stages following your step-by-step WaterWise plan over time.
Giving your design and plan some serious thought now could also potentially save you a lot of time, work, frustration and money as you install your new WaterWise landscape.
Your plan will help give you an idea of what your landscape will look like when it’s finished. However, more importantly, it will also be a fantastic guide for knowing what needs to be worked on or installed first, second, third and so on… so that you don’t have to tear some of your hard work back out or re-do areas because you got ahead of yourself!
